We wouldn’t say this to someone running a marathon (and labor is a marathon). We wouldn’t say it to someone preparing for surgery. So why do we say it to someone intentionally preparing to bring life into the world? When you put it that way, it feels a little minimizing… doesn’t it? In my years as a doula, I’ve supported many unmedicated births—and what I see is never someone “trying to be a hero.” I see intention. I see preparation. I see deep trust and surrender. Unmedicated birth isn’t about a reward that doesn’t exist. There are countless reasons someone may choose this path. It may be feeling safer avoiding certain interventions, wanting to stay connected to the process, or simply being curious about what their body is capable of. That’s something I’ve had the privilege of witnessing not just on my own, but alongside Trinity Hankins. Together, we’ve supported dozens of births and seen firsthand what happens when a mother is truly prepared and supported in this way.
